Before my son was born, I gave absolutely no thought to baby sleep (let alone a bedtime routine)…which is hilarious because now it’s ALL I seem to think about! It turns out our precious little baby wasn’t too fond of sleep – especially at night.
About a month in, after reading a nauseating amount of articles and blogs about how to get this little sleep-bandit to snooze more at night, I found there was a common thread among everything I read: the bedtime routine.
So, from a very early age, we began creating our bedtime routine. It actually took quite a few months for us to settle on a set routine. We tested a few things and chose what seemed to relax him, and nixed other things that seemed to get him too excited to sleep.
Our son is now 15 months, and though the times at which we do things have varied slightly, we’ve had the same bedtime routine since about 8 months.
Here’s what works for us!
Baby & Toddler Bedtime Routine
6:30 – Bathtime
6:45 – Diaper time (basically, he runs around in his diaper in his room)
7:00 – Offer sippy cup of milk
– Brush teeth
7:25 – Say “goodnight world” & wave out the window
– Close curtains
– Change diaper & put on PJs
– Sing song & read book
– Turn off light, rock in chair and sing another song
7:30 – Turn on sound machine
– Lay down in crib, awake
– Say goodnight and give kisses
– Leave the room
